Located close to the largest open-pit uranium mine, Arandis has been called the Uranium Capital of the World. This proximity means that most of the residents living here are somehow connected to the mine.
The Rössing Uranium Mine was established in 1978 and the town of Arandis was established in 1994. Mining activities continue to this day as demand for nuclear energy has risen.
The town has an estimated 8 000 residents and houses the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology. The Arandis Airport and Arandis Railway Station can also be found nearby.
