Renovate your bathroom on a budget

From improving the functionality and layout of the space to making it more comfortable and efficient to use - a bathroom renovation can increase the value and appeal of a home thus making it more attractive to potential buyers.

Even if you are not planning on selling your home, a bathroom renovation can also help home owners to enjoy the space more, upgrade fixtures and fittings to be more eco-friendly, and address any leaks or other maintenance needed.

Here are our five top tips for renovating your bathroom on a budget:

1. Plan, design and budget long before you want to start your renovation

As with any home renovation project, a solid plan and budget are essential to keep track of all costs. Whether you are hiring a professional or doing it yourself, a proper plan will keep everyone on the same page, curbing the possibility of big, expensive surprises.

For example, if you are planning on gutting the entire bathroom and replacing all the tiles, faucets and bath decide before you start what you are willing to cut costs on and what not. Will you forego expensive marble countertops for an alternative finish so you can still have your dream bath?

Once you have done this, stick to the budget and shop around for deals. Who knows, you might get a good deal on tiles that allows you to spend a little more on a more expensive light fixture.

2. Keep plumbing in place

Renovations on a budget mean that you are limited in what you can do - completely changing the layout of the bathroom means that you will need to get a plumber and builder in to move pipes and other plumbing essentials around - this will push your costs up

If you just want to update the toilet, sink, and shower or bath, then purchasing new ones and fitting them exactly where the previous ones were will allow for a far quicker and cheaper bathroom remodel.

3. Upgrade what you already have

If you are on a tight budget, then updating some of the hardware and furniture you have in your bathroom is an extremely quick and easy way to brighten up the room and make a huge difference.

Changing handles, taps, lighting, drains, towel racks, and toilet roll holders can help to give a room a new feel and instantly modernise it.

You also don't have to shop for the most expensive ranges to give your bathroom a luxe feel. Shop around for discounts on ranges and don't overlook affordable options either.

4. Give the room a new coat of paint

Along with updating hardware, a new coat of paint will instantly improve how your bathroom looks and feels.

Painting the walls in particular will remove scuff marks and wear and tear and help bring out the potential of the room. Shop for tile paints or tile stickers if you can't afford to paint the whole room right now, these small changes over time will make a difference.

5. Go green

If you want to continue the savings after getting your bathroom renovated, then greener, water-conserving technologies will help to save water and money in the long run.

Choosing shower heads, toilets, and sinks with low-flow technology will ensure you are saving water, money, and the environment over time.
